Mr. Bekkers was one of those truly unforgettable teachers who shaped not just how we learned, but how we thought. I was lucky to have him for homeroom, chemistry, and biology at St. Mary's Rural High and I’ll always remember his dry, quirky sense of humor and his no-nonsense approach in the classroom. He had a remarkable way of making space for curiosity. If you genuinely wanted to learn, he gave you all the time in the world. He was also held in the high regard in our home. I smile thinking about how he would practice his German with my mother during parent-teacher meetings or when he would see her. It was such a small but meaningful reflection of who he was: thoughtful, dedicated, and quietly engaging. He made a lasting impact on so many of us, and I feel very grateful to have been one of his students. He will be deeply missed.

To the family of Marinus. I was sad to hear of Marinus's passing. I remember working with him at the school's bus garage when I drove the bus. He was always a pleasure to work with and was well liked. I am sure he will be missed by many.

It was my great honour and pleasure to visit with Marinus over a number of months as a volunteer in St.Martha’s. We had our share of serious conversations, and we also had our share of laughter. He was always welcoming and the handshakes we shared at the end of each visit were ones of mutual. affection and gratitude. I loved to hear his memories, and bear witness to his sense of humour - and lasting pride in his heritage. I first met him when a rookie teacher at St.Andrew Junior High. I last sat with him in his room in the long term care facility in Port Hawkesbury. The span of a life time. It breaks my heart that those meetings have come to an end.

Joanne and family, I have so many fond memories of Marinus' gentle and kind presence growing up nearby. Even as the lawn got worn down to mud from us playing football and soccer, he always seemed patient as he worked around the property. It was a testament to his patience that he never once sent me packing back up the road given the amount of time I spent at your place! Wishing you all the best in this difficult time.
