Obituary of Evelyn Patricia (Ash) Girard

Evelyn Patricia (Ash) Girard, age 84 of Rear Monastery, Antigonish County, passed away peacefully on February 4, 2025, in St. Martha’s Regional Hospital, Antigonish.

Born in Rear Monastery, on February 3, 1941, she was a daughter of the late William Patrick and Margaret Rebecca (Ash) Ash.

Evelyn was a proud life long resident of Rear Monastery.  She was active in the community and was president of the Rear Monastery Community Development Association for 12 years. Her door was always open and she loved when family and friends would drop in for a visit. Evelyn enjoyed reading the paper everyday, which she did right up to her recent illness, and listening to the older country music.

She is survived by her brothers Kevin MacDougall (Mandy), Monastery and Robert Joshua (Deedee) London, Ontario. Aunt Evelyn will be greatly missed by her many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews who loved her dearly.

Predeceased by her husband, Melbourne “Mel” Girard, sisters, Sarah Irving, Dorothy Daye, Alberta Izzard, Shirley and Bertha in infancy; brothers Leonard, Charles, James “Junior” and her step-mother Effie Desmond Lawrence.

The family would like to thank the Palliative Care Unit team of St. Martha’s Regional Hospital, Dr. David Cudmore and staff who provided exceptional care and compassion during this most difficult time. We would also like to express our sincere gratitude to Mandy MacDougall for the care and support provided to Evelyn in her final months. 

Visitation will be held from 2:00-4:00 and 6:00- 8:00 pm on Friday  February 7^th  in MacIsaac Funeral Home, 61 Pleasant Street, Antigonish. Funeral Mass will be held Saturday at 12:00 pm in St. Peter’s Church, Tracadie, Reverend John Barry presiding.  Spring burial will be in the Parish cemetery.
