To Penny and the family of Martin MacDonald
Sending you belated but sincere condolences on Martin's passing. He was truly a fine gentleman and passionate educator - and piper, of course. Our paths crossed often, in schools, at Highland Society meetings or on "the Field." He was a very caring and giving individual. Do take care at this difficult time. Thinking of you. Dear Penny and family and the many, many friends of dear Martin MacDonald!
I just found out today (Easter Sunday April 20th) that Martin died in March; I had written a long winded letter to him in Feb. not realizing how ill he was so hopefully it was amusing and not annoying. Martin was such a unique person who had impact in many areas of life including my own - he was my "boss" one summer I was exec. dir. of Naomi Society = fantastic. Then he was my principal at Braemore & when a parent wanted me scolded or worse because we did a bit of a Hallowe'en theme in class, Martin way-laid them and assured them no evil was being taught! His letter of support I will never forget...on top of all that wonderful personality he was musical and thoughtful and kind...may all those good memories of a life well lived and his energy/spirit be of comfort during those lonesome moments. Our very best to you and your family...holding you in my heart, Judy (Donovan Whitty) - and Doug Whitty - colleagues in education; Charlottetown PEI since 2000.

Dear Penny and Family,
My sympathy to all of you. Martin was a positive person, and motivator in his many roles as an educator, volunteer, and band member of the Antigonish Highland Society Pipe Band.
I got to know Martin when I played with the AHS in the early 2000s. Martin's enthusiasm for piping, our Scottish culture, and contributing to the Antigonish Highland Games Society was contagious. When AHS started coming to Pictou County to practice here in Pictou as we also had members from Truro and the surrounding area, Martin and Gerald Mac Donald would load up the vehicles in Antigonish and come here for practices, then we took our turns heading to Antigonish for practices in his hometown. We had wonderful conversations about Scottish culture, his love of his career and his students as a teacher, his family, and local and global situations or news. Martin was a motivator and a wonderful bandmate with our youth, encouraging them in their contributions to the band, competitions, and outside band life, whether in sports, music, or volunteering. My thoughts are with you all. Take Care.

To Penny and the MacDonald family, my deepest condolences on Martin’s passing. I had the privilege of working with Martin for two years at the Department of Education. Together we forged a successful path for the young readers of Nova Scotia through the first years of Active Young Readers. Martin was always thoughtful and kind, willing to take on various jobs and provided much support to the teachers of Nova Scotia. He was the epitome of a gentleman. An absolute pleasure to work alongside.

To Penny, Jeff. Laura. Lisa, Patricia and families.
On behalf or the C.A.R.E. committee of St. Ninian's Parish (Canadians Accepting Refugees Everywhere), I extend our deepest condolences to you all.
Martin shared his leadership skills in his role as Chair, providing a clear focus to the committee; he generously shared his time, welcoming and offering friendship, support and compassion by actively assisting our newcomers in their settlement process.
He will be dearly missed by the committee members and newcomers, all of whom will remember the impact he made in his work. As one newcomer stated "Martin was my first friend".
Our thoughts are with you at this very sad time,
Sue O'Brien, for the committee.

Dear Penny and family:
I makes me sad to read of Martin’s recent passing. I know he shared a passion for education with Wally and they both worked hard to offer the best to Antigonish students. His love for his Scottish heritage and especially for the sublime music of the bagpipes was also evident. But above all, his love for you, Penny, and your children, motivated his life and made him happy. May your memories of happier days and the support of your friends sustain you during this difficult time.
