Mary and family, I am sorry to hear of Jim's passing. He was a big influence in my life. He was always willing to listen and offer support. Of all the teachers I have had, he is the one that I remember the most. A couple of years ago I looked him up on Facebook and friend requested him. It took a week or two for him to respond but he did! I started a conversation with him. After a month or two, I decided to go see him. I arrived at his door, not knowing how I would be received, nor what I would say to someone whom I hadn't seen in 52 years. I introduced myself to Mary and she invited me in. I soon realized that he didn't have a clue who I was. I told him about my family that lived in Antigonish. We soon had a conversation going. After about half an hour, I decided to leave. I went to give him a hug and kiss. He was sitting in his chair and it wasn't easy. I teased him and said, if you were standing up this would be a lot easier. The next thing I knew, he was struggling to stand. I didn't realize why he was doing this. Between Mary and I, we got him to his feet. He used his walker and hurried to the corner of the counter where he could prop himself up easily. He held his arms out to me and gave me a hug and kiss which I returned. He said you have no idea how much this means to me that you took time to come and see me. I told him that he could call me any time that he felt like talking and that I would come and see him again. I have had several visits with him since then as well. I loved him even though he couldn't remember me. Rita (Ryan) Matheson

To the Family and friends of Big Jim MacLellan
I wish to extend my sincere condolences on the passing of Big Jim. He was my science teacher in Grade 7 at the St. Andrew Junior High School. I loved his class. He exposed us to science that was not necessarily covered in the provided text book. His classes were always interesting. Among other things, as a young boy in 1968 from Antigonish, I learned about the importance of natural gas for Canada. Most of us had never even heard of natural gas. The same can be said about nuclear power. And he also impressed upon us the importance of recycling items we routinely threw away in the garbage.
May he rest in peace.

So sorry to read of Jim's passing.
If I am correct, I met Jim when he visited our home on St. Mary's street with fellow Cape Bretoners. (Probably with FinlayJoseph)

I am happy to write that (circa 1970) I was a student of Big Jim. Like his cohort Ronnie A&E, he was of large stature and both men were not easily intimated nor were they intimidating to those in their care. Unlike some of their cowardly and bullish male colleagues that swaggered about the halls of St Andrew’s Junior High as if they were “it” and “a bag of chips.” Nasty small minded people who did not belong in the educational system. I can’t remember what Jim taught but it certainly wasn’t drama. A class with Jim was a lesson in real life. He believed that students would get out of class what they put into it. It is noted in Jim’s obit that “they (his students) knew better than to show up in class without completing their homework.” Jim was never mean with the under producers, but all of his former students remember his mantra to the lazy one: “Ya come to school to eat your lunch.” Those 8 words in Jim’s slow drawl were enough to chasten the brashest of nincompoop. God bless Jim … he taught us kids as though we were adults - (no work = no reward) - avoiding dramatic displays of feigned disappointment. Over the 13 years I spent in Antigonish’s school system there were few teachers who taught me more about life than “Big Jim”. Rest in peace … you have earned it.
