Tony McVicar

Obituary of Tony McVicar

McVicar, John Anthony, of 6 Chestnut Street, Antigonish, died peacefully on May 6, 2025 in the Palliative Care Unit of St. Martha's Regional Hospital, surrounded by his family.

Tony was the fourth in a family of 12 of the late Carroll and Ella (MacDonald) McVicar. Growing up on Chestnut Street, he remained in the family home all his life. It was a home where the values of Faith, Hope and Love, were instilled in his being and guided him throughout his life. It might have been at the hardest time of his life, where these values and the love he gave out was returned full circle by the prayer and positive offerings from those who were lucky enough to call him brother and friend.

Tony was a quiet man who found fun and pleasure in family gatherings, daily drives, fishing, and simply lying back and enjoying music. His "little piece of Heaven", the cottage in McArras Brook, was where he found the most happiness. It would not be a visit here or to his home from his nieces and nephews where the welcome would be so heartfelt. His grandnieces and nephews loved his bear hugs and his interest in all their activities. For many years, he enjoyed meeting up with friends, old and new, at the camp on Brown's Mountain, enjoying the annual "Springer Celebration".

Tony was a retired member of the Antigonish Town Volunteer Fire Department where he cherished his time and camaraderie with his friends.

Tony was predeceased by his parents, Carroll and Ella, brother Peter, sister (baby) Caroline and niece Ellaine Chisholm. He is survived by his siblings Dolorosa (late Ed) Kelly; Katherine Anne (Jerome) Chisholm; Billy (Peggy); Lawrence (Cathy); Howard (Cathie); Collie (Evie); Caroline (Tony) MacDonald; and Geta (Steve) Macquarrie and their families.

There will be no visitation as per Tony's request. Funeral Mass will be held at 2:00pm on May 14, 2025 in St. St. Ninian Cathedral, Reverend John Barry presiding. Burial in the parish cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Palliative Care Unit of St. Martha's Regional Hospital.
