Monsieur Martell was my 5th grade french immersion teacher 2001-2002. I have a couple vivid memories of him. We were in class during the 9/11 attacks and he threw the news on the TV and explained what was going on - he made it clear what was happening was a turning point in history, but that we students were all safe. Another, is when I was having a tough time socially, he pulled me aside and gave me a great pep talk and filled me with self confidence...
I didn't realise it at the time that Mr. Martell - or as I'd come to know him later in life as "Joe" had been my neigbour my whole life. Just a few houses up from me. It was always nice to cross his path on his speed walks up or down Viewville Street. It was great to see him at the RK when he visited Peggy. The love for her was clear. Thinking of the family. May he rest peacefully now.

On behalf of Pat and I we send the Martell family our condolences. Both Pat and I worked with Joe for many years and his energy and passion for education and the students was contagious for younger staff. He was always involved in school life and would stop at nothing to assist a colleague. Mr. Martell’s respect for our profession was well received and touched many life’s over the years. Joe you left a positive mark on many! RIP

So sorry for your loss
I have to share this story with you.
My father went to the hospital in January 2024. You mom, Peggy , was his roommate. One afternoon, you dad came in to visit her. What a coincidence it was. My dad said to me, I know that fella. I asked “ how do u know him”. My dad said I can’t remember. Come to find out, your dad was Joseph Martell and was raised in Rockdale. Well guess what, my dad’s name was Joseph Martell and was also raised in Rockdale. They knew each other but had been years and years since they saw each other. They of course had chats about “back home “
You dad had a great love for your mom. We seen that in the two weeks we were around them. Your mom was always sitting with us ( and usually eating a donut and tea from Tim’s ) lol .
I was sad for her when I seen your dad had passed away. She always said to us “ Joe is on his way to get me “

I just wanted to send out my condolences to the Martell family. I have had the pleasure of knowing Joe for many years. I was one of his student's, and yes Best Teacher Award goes to Joe. He never gave up on my and always got after me to stay focus and keep moving forward. He had a way with people that has stuck with me till this day. His energy and thrive to make people believe in themselves was amazing. When others thought I wouldn't make it. He knew that I would and years later when I saw him again and told him about my life he was so proud. We definitely need more individuals like this man. He was truly an inspiration to me and so many others... Very sorry for your loss, his memory will live on forever through all of us. St Andrew's Junior School........

Sincere condolences to all members of the Martell Family. We were first introduced to Joe at Stephen and Jenna's wedding. He immediately struck us as a very pleasant and friendly gentleman. Over the years we had the opportunity to visit with him when he came to New Waterford to celebrate Evan, Andrew and Lucas' birthdays. He was always interested in what you had to say and had something positive to add to any conversation.
We are so sorry for your loss and hope that all the wonderful memories you have made over the years will carry you through this difficult time. May He Rest In Peace.

So sorry to hear of Joe (Velma's) passing. Joe and I came from the same community, Rockdale. Joe was a very welcoming person and had the ability to get along with all. Joe came from humble beginning but worked hard at his various crafts. I used to see a lot of Joe and Peggy in my formative years as a teacher as we had common friends in the Antigonish area. My sympathies to the family. HIs passing is a loss to you and to your community.
