MacDonald, Angus Hugh, March 28, 1938.

It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Hugh “Hughie” MacDonald, 87, of Maryvale in St. Martha’s Regional Hospital on Thursday August 28, 2025.

Born and raised in Maryvale, Antigonish County, he was the son of the late Angus Hugh and Sadie Jane (Grant) MacDonald.

Hugh lived in Maryvale all his life. He loved the land, especially the forest. This was his paradise. He was a strong person, both physically and spiritually. He had strong gifted hands and was a jack of all trades; name it and he could build it or fix it  He demonstrated a creative eye in all he made. Whether he was building his homemade saw mill, snow blower or creating anything out of wood, he had the plans in his head and don’t tell him it couldn’t be done.

Hugh had a natural flair for telling a story. He will be remembered for his sense of humour and his antics, always up to some sort of shenanigans. He had a great love for the fiddle, loved to dance and could be seen dancing daily about the kitchen to a good tune on the radio.

A truck driver for most of his life, he drove for Scotsburn Dairy, John W. McCarron Trucking Ltd., and for the Municipality of Antigonish before retiring.

He is survived by his wife Shirlee MacDonald; sons Michael “Gopher” (Susan) MacDonald, Mississauga; Allan, Maryvale; daughters Mary Jo (Blaine) Jessome, Lower South River; Louise (Anthony MacDougall), Maryvale; Juanita (Dan) MacGillivray, Morristown; daughter-in-law Sonya MacDonald, Old Maryvale Rd.; step-son Scott Egbert, New York; step daughter Kim (Troy) MacLean, Frankville. He is also survived by many loving grandchildren & great grandchildren. Surviving also are his sisters Betty Chisholm, Catherine MacDonald and Joyce (Kevin) Maguire, all of Maryvale, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Predeceased by his first wife, Anna Marie (Frosst); son Wayde MacDonald; grandson Ian Kirk; sisters Theresa MacDonald and Mary “Collie A.” MacDonald; step-son William “Skip” Egbert; step-daughter Allyson Egbert; also by other extended family members.
