Joe A. MacDonald

Obituary of Joe A. MacDonald

It is with deep sadness that the family of Joe A. MacDonald of Antigonish, Nova Scotia, announces his passing. Joe A. was the eldest son of the late John L. and Lucy (Gillis) MacDonald. He was predeceased by his parents, his brother Hector (Carole Gillies), and his sister-in-law Arlene (Pat).

He is survived by his brothers John Hugh (Thelma), Mike (Jayne), Pat (Patsy Ross), and his sister Gerarda (Doug); sister-in-law Carole; along with 18 nieces and nephews and 26 grandnieces and grandnephews, all of whom he held in great affection.

A graduate of St. Francis Xavier University (Class of 1972) with a Bachelor of Business Administration, Joe A. was a lifelong supporter of his alma mater. He operated a construction company for several years before transitioning to a successful career in automobile sales.

In 1999, Joe A. suffered a severe stroke that left him partially paralyzed. Demonstrating remarkable strength and perseverance, he continued to live independently for many years. In recent years, he resided at Antigonish Manor, where he formed many close and lasting friendships among residents and staff.

Joe A. was known for his sociable nature and keen sense of humour. He greatly enjoyed leisurely drives, visits with family and friends, and a well-told story or good-natured prank—often of his own making.

A man of deep faith, Joe A. found strength and comfort in his Catholic beliefs and the teachings of the Church.

The family extends sincere gratitude to the physicians, nurses, and support staff of the St. Martha’s Regional Hospital, and especially the Palliative Care Unit for their exceptional care and compassion.
