Obituary of James David O'Brien
James (Jimmy) David O’Brien, age 64, passed away peacefully on December 30, 2025, at Saint Martha’s Regional Hospital.
Jimmy was raised in Antigonish, a place that shaped who he was and where many of his lifelong friendships were formed. He spent much of his working life in construction and as a farm labourer at West River Farms, never afraid of hard work and always willing to give his best.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Marlene O’Brien, whom he missed dearly. Along with his mom and dad, Bill and Margaret MacPherson. Jimmy is survived by his daughters Melissa Ebbett and Katrina Worth (Michael Worth). He was a proud grandfather to Kristian, Tayler, Jordan, Nina, Heidi, Riley, and Benjamin, and a cherished great-grandfather to Esme, Alex, Helena, Novah, Alayah, and Claira. He also leaves behind many friends who were not just friends, but brothers and sisters to him. Specific acknowledgement to Gerard, Jimbob, Buzzy and Donald.
When Jimmy wasn’t working, you could usually find him at Dooley’s, Piper’s, or the Legion, enjoying good company and conversation. He loved sports, especially darts and hockey—and never missed a chance to cheer on the Chicago Blackhawks. Jimmy was always ready to lend a helping hand, always down for a game of bingo or a hand of crib, and always up for a (fairly long) phone conversation with anyone who needed it.
Jimmy will be remembered for his kindness, loyalty, and the way he showed up for people—no questions asked. His presence, laughter, and steady support will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Antigonish Legion on Wednesday, January 7th, from 2:00–4:00 p.m., where family and friends are invited to gather, share stories, and remember Jimmy in the way he would have wanted—together.
