It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Hugh Daniel MacNeil, who died peacefully in St. Martha’s Regional Hospital on Monday, April 13, 2026 with family at his side. He was the son of the late Mike and Sadie (MacPherson) MacNeil of Fraser’s Mills.

Hughie Dan was a man who truly found his peace in the great outdoors. He was happiest with the wind in his face, whether traveling the back roads, out on his four-wheeler, or surrounded by the quiet of the woods.

He had a deep love for hunting and fishing, spending countless hours in nature doing what he enjoyed most, especially with his youngest brother, Sylvester. The woods and waters were not just places he visited- they were where he felt most at home. He was also a fan of hockey and ball games, always enjoying the chance to watch a good game and share those moments with others.

A proud and dedicated member of the Labourers International Union of North America, Local 615, he was known for his strong work ethic and the pride he took in his work. He valued honesty, hard work, and the simple things in life. He will be remembered as a man who lived on his own terms- quietly, genuinely, and close to the land he loved. His presence will be deeply missed by all who know him. Hughie was known for always offering a helping hand to anyone in need.

He is survived by his sisters Cathy Chisholm and Marion MacNeil, brothers Allan Joseph (Veronica), Micheal Bernie and Sylvester. He leaves behind many nieces and nephews who will cherish his memory. He was predeceased by his brother in law, Gerald Chisholm.

The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Kate MacInnis and staff at the Inverness Hospital. Also, thanks to staff at St. Martha’s Hospital who provided such excellent care to Hughie in his final days.
