Obituary of Catherine Anne Armstrong

Please share a memory of Catherine to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Catherine Anne Armstrong, age 94, passed away on May 4, 2026. A lifelong resident of Port Hawkesbury, she was a daughter of the late Henry and Sabine Malcolm.

Catherine was predeceased by her beloved husband, Lauchlin Armstrong, and several of her siblings. She is survived by her four children and their families: Lauchlin Armstrong, Jr. (Shelly), Daniel Armstrong, Karen Armstrong (Dwayne), and George Armstrong (Sam). She is survived by her grandchildren: Christopher Huskins, Madison Armstrong, Gavin Armstrong, Desiree Hayter-Thompson, and Jacob Hayter-Thompson; three great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She leaves behind her sisters, Elsie Michaud and Liz Tighe (husband John).

In her early years, Catherine worked as a telephone operator with MT&T, and later partnered with her husband, Lauchlin, in running several family convenience stores. However, her true heart was always with her family, her music, and her faith. A faithful servant of God, Catherine was a lifelong member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and a dedicated member of the choir. Music was a constant in her life; she loved performing with her fiddle and traveling across Cape Breton to attend music festivals. Catherine’s compassion extended globally through her long-term sponsorship of children in other countries. Some of her happiest times were spent with family at her sister's home, filled with piano, singing, and fiddle music. Whether it was a midnight fishing trip to the Causeway or a camper trip around the Cabot Trail, Catherine’s organized nature and adventurous spirit ensured her family was always surrounded by love and joy.

The family would like to extend their sincere thanks to the doctors, nurses, and staff of the Emergency Room and the Palliative Care Unit at the Strait Richmond Hospital. We deeply appreciate the love and care shown to our mother while she was in their care. We also wish to express our heartfelt gratitude to the Hawkesbury Nursing Home for the exceptional care they provided; we know she will be missed by the staff who cared for her so well.

Visitation will be held from 2-4 and 6-8 pm Thursday, May 7th in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury and 6-8 pm only (please note change in time) on Friday, May 8th in MacIsaac Funeral Home, Antigonish. Funeral Mass will be held at 1pm on Saturday, May 9th in Immaculate Conception Church, Heatherton, Reverend Dennis Lamey presiding. Burial in the parish cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to Strait Richmond Palliative Care.
