Obituary of James Reginald Macdonald

Please share a memory of James to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of James (Jim) Reginald Macdonald, aka Blasty, 68, of Gaspereau, Nova Scotia on May 9th, 2026.

Jim was born to BGen JK and Sara “Dadie” (Landry) Macdonald in Zweibrücken, Germany while they were stationed there with the military. Afterwards the family lived in Ottawa, Winnipeg, Halifax, and finally Antigonish, where Jim spent his teenage years and formed many enduring friendships. Jim always considered Antigonish his hometown. From there he hunted and fished with his dad all over the Atlantic provinces, which became a great source of enjoyment for him for the rest of his life.

In 1980 Jim graduated from St. FX with a BSc and a Diploma in Engineering. After that he attended the NS Land Survey Institute to train for “a real job.” He had a successful career in marine construction where he made even more lifelong friends. His work took him all over the world—eventually carrying him to every continent except Antarctica.

Jim was the proud father of Sara, Caleigh, and James Jr. all of whom he loved dearly. He reveled in spending time camping with them, where he could be found soundly beating them at washer toss and roasting the perfect golden-brown marshmallow.

Jim met Donna, his life partner and best friend, at a card table in 1994. Over the years they made many happy memories playing bridge and cribbage, listening to his collection of music, and travelling. They spent their summers camping, mostly at Rissers Beach and Kejimkujik National Park. They also enjoyed just staying home in the beautiful Gaspereau Valley, highlighted by family visits with the children and, later, grandchildren.

Besides his parents, Jim was predeceased by his brother Kennedy and his sisters-in-law Beverly (Martin) and Sandie (Murchie).

He is survived by his wife, Donna Wilson; children, Sara (Tyler Faithfull), Caleigh (Dan Conway), and James (Chantal Peppin); five grandchildren, Christina and Sheamus Faithfull, Annabelle, Alanna, and Everest Conway; siblings, Bill (Loretta), Donald, and Margaret-Ann; the mother of his children, Claire Dunne; and many treasured nieces and nephews.

Jim loved life! He cherished his family. He was known for his integrity and sense of humour and was often seen with an ice cold Olands in hand.

He will be deeply missed and forever loved.

A celebration of life will be held at the Royal Canadian Legion, Antigonish on August 15th, 2026 at 2:00PM.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jim’s memory to Cystic Fibrosis Canada or the Canadian Cancer Society.
