Obituary of Carolin Christel Schluter

Please share a memory of Carolin to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Carolin Christel Schluter, of Georgeville, NS, passed away peacefully at the age of 58 on Saturday May 16, 2026 in Antigonish, surrounded by friends and family.

Carolin was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, on July 8, 1967 to Lothar and Christel Schluter. When Carolin was 7 years old, the family moved to Elderbank, NS, when Lothar accepted a position in the Department of Pharmacology at Dalhousie University. After finishing high school, Carolin earned her own degree in Sociology at Dalhousie University and embarked on a career with the NSLC. Her work eventually led her to employment at the NSLC in Antigonish and a home in Georgeville with John Allan MacLean. The two started their own family here, welcoming Maya Schluter-MacLean to the world in 2000.

It was in Georgeville that the full measure of Carolin’s personality emerged. She was an ardent lover of dogs and was passionate about canine rescue. She owned several rescued dogs and found many homes for other canines over the years. Carolin also served on the board of the North Shore Volunteer Fire Department. Later in life, Carolin also became an important and beloved force in the production of drag shows in Antigonish and at St.FX, known as the “Antigonish Auntie” for many drag artists who performed in Antigonish. She became famous for her meticulous care for the needs of the performers.

Carolin is survived by her spouse John Allan MacLean and her daughter Maya Schluter-MacLean, her mother Christel Schluter (Caleb Higgins), and her brother Raymond Schluter and his family, as well as her many friends. Carolin is predeceased by her father Lothar Schluter.

Carolin was known for her wonderful sense of humour and her strong personality, which was larger than life in many ways. Carolin was a surrogate mother to many, nurturing and mentoring young people who needed support. She was always an ally to those in need, including homeless people who she fed when she could. Carolin was well-known and beloved in her community and beyond.

For those who wish to honour Carolin, there will be a Celebration of Her Life on Saturday, May 23, 2026, at 2 pm, at the North Shore Volunteer Fire Hall on the Marsh Road in Cape George, NS. Private burial to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Coastal K9 Rescue Society
