Obituary of Karen Theresa MacKinnon

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Karen Theresa MacKinnon of Antigonish, Nova Scotia, at the age of 60.

Karen was predeceased by her beloved parents, Mary Margaret Grace and John Leonard Grace, whose love, deep faith, and strong values helped shape the woman she became. She was also predeceased by her brother Lawrence in infancy. Karen spoke of her parents with immense gratitude, describing them as her angels on earth and the foundation of the woman she was. The home they created was one filled with love, laughter, and kindness; gifts she carried with her throughout her own life.

Karen’s greatest pride and joy was her family. She leaves behind her loving children, Sara (Logan), Andrea (Liam), and Alex (Morgan), along with her cherished grandson, Adrian, of whom she was an incredibly proud Nana. Adrian was the light of her life. She treasured every moment they spent together, whether it was reading books, playing games, sharing laughs, and watching him discover the world around him. Their bond was one built on unconditional love, and being his Nana was one of the greatest blessings of her life.

Karen will be forever lovingly remembered by her ten siblings: John, Ann, Bertha (Colin), Anthony (Rose), Margaret, Lawrence (Andrea), Mary, Donna (Al), Kathleen (Mike), and Colleen, as well as by many cherished nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, extended family members, and dear friends. Karen is lovingly remembered by her honourary daughter, Kathrine MacDonald, whose unwavering love, kindness, as well as professional nursing and personal care meant the world to her and all of her family. Karen will also be missed by her loving dog, Roxie, whose companionship brought her endless love and joy. 

Karen had a remarkable gift for making everyone feel welcomed, valued, and loved. Her warmth, gentle spirit, quick wit, and genuine kindness left an imprint on every life she touched. She found joy in life’s simple blessings, especially Sunday afternoons spent with her sisters after Mass, where family gathered to laugh, share stories, and enjoy one another’s company. She also treasured her special bond with her great-nieces and great-nephews, whose visits never failed to brighten her day and give her another story to tell. 

Karen dedicated her life to caring for others with compassion, dignity, and grace. For 38 years, she served as a Continuing Care Assistant at the R.K. MacDonald Nursing Home in Antigonish, where her gentle heart, patience, and kindness touched the lives of countless residents, families, and colleagues. She treated every resident with the same dignity and respect she would have wanted for those she loved. Caring for others wasn’t simply her profession, but it was who she was. Her work was an extension of her heart.

Karen’s faith guided her with strength, grace, and compassion, and was reflected in the love and kindness she shared with everyone she met. Karen will be remembered for her gentle spirit and boundless love for those around her. Through life’s greatest joys and toughest moments, she often reminded us: “God is good, dear, and he’s always with us. Don’t forget that.” Though our hearts are broken, we find comfort in knowing her legacy lives on through the many lives she touched and the family she loved so deeply.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the incredible physicians, nurses, and staff of the Intensive Care Unit and Palliative Care Team at St. Martha’s Regional Hospital for the exceptional compassion, dignity, and care they provided during Karen’s final days. We are also deeply grateful to members of the community whose prayers and support have carried us through this difficult time. As Mom would so often remind us, “People are just amazing, and I’ve been so blessed.”

Visitation will be held on Sunday, July 05 from 2:00–4:00 p.m. and 7:00–9:00 p.m. in MacIsaac Funeral Home. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, July 06, at 11:00am in St. Andrew’s Parish Church, with Father Danny MacLennan presiding. Burial in the parish cemetery

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Vincent de Paul.  May Karen rest in eternal peace, reunited with those who went before her and forever held in God’s loving embrace. Though she is no longer by our side, her love, her faith, and her gentle spirit will remain in our hearts forever.
