Obituary of Jean Chisholm

Mildred “Jean” Chisholm (Kennedy) passed away peacefully on Saturday July 18, 2026 at St Martha’s Regional Hospital surrounded by her family.

Born on October 3, 1941 in Giants Lake, Jean was the daughter of Fred and Alma (Cousins) Kennedy. Jean often shared stories and fond memories from her childhood. Those memories stayed with her throughout her life and she enjoyed sharing them with family and friends. Her parents and siblings remained an important part of her life, and she spoke of them often with love.

From one of her earliest jobs at Frasers Corner Store, to her years at McKenna’s Pharmacy  she made many lasting friendships. In 1984, she started at the National Philatelic Centre and remained there until her retirement. She cherished the many friendships and experiences throughout her career.

Jean was known for her warmth, kindness, and antique daily drivers. Mom loved animals of all kinds from family pets to backyard bird watching.

Family was everything to Jean. Her children, Heather, Glenn, and Gary, were the center of her world and she treasured the time she spent with them and her grandchildren. Mom worked hard all her life, making sure her family was cared for.

As a grandmother, Jean was a loving presence in the lives of her five granddaughters. She attended their plays, sporting events, birthdays, and many important moments throughout their lives. The love she shared with her granddaughters was one of the greatest joys of her life. 

Following health challenges in her later years, Jean was able to remain in the comfort of her home thanks to the dedication and support of Rod, her son Gary, caregiver Mary Chaytor and the many trips made from Halifax by her children Heather and Glenn. Their care, commitment allowed her to continue enjoying the people and memories she loved most.

Jean is survived by her husband of 56 years Roddie Chisholm, daughter Heather (Cory) Alexander, sons Glenn (Sarah), and Gary Chisholm. Granddaughters Emlyn, Rohan and Amelia Alexander and Kennedy and Ada Chisholm. Her sister-in-law Hazel Kennedy, brother-in-law Jack (Agnes) Chisholm and many nieces and nephews who will miss her greatly.

Jean was predeceased by her sisters Muriel Alice and Jesse “Nellie” and brothers Victor (Shirley), Stan, Charlie (Jean) and Carl.

The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to the staff of St. Martha’s Regional Hospital for the exceptional care. Even during her extended stay Jean found a way to brighten their days with her warm smile, and appreciation for the care she received.

Visitation will be on Wednesday, July 22 from 2-4 and 6-8 in MacIsaac Funeral Home, 61 Pleasant St in Antigonish. Funeral Service will be held on Thursday at 11am in St. James United Church, Antigonish, with Reverend Peter Smith presiding.
