Obituary of Tracy Everitt

It is with great sadness that we announce that Tracy Everitt passed away on Tuesday, August 11, 2026 in Halifax at the Victoria Hospital after a brave battle with cancer.

Tracy was born March 31, 1973, in Regina, Saskatchewan and grew up in the Saskatoon, Saskatchewan area. Tracy lived briefly in Saskatoon and then moved onto the family acreage in 1978 where her family kept horses and sheep, giving her a lifelong passion for rural living. After Tracy graduated Delisle Composite School, she went on to earn her undergraduate degree in nutrition at the University of Saskatchewan. Tracy spent many years working as a dietitian in various communities in Alberta, in the Red Deer area and in the northern reaches of the province. In 2006 Tracy earned her Master's in Adult Education at St. Francis Xavier University and in 2019 she completed her PhD in the Department of Community Health and Epidemiology at the College of Medicine, University of Saskatchewan. At that time, she returned to her alma mater, St Francis Xavier University, this time as a faculty member in the Department of Human Nutrition. Tracy remained a professor at St. Francis Xavier University until her passing.

Tracy grew up on a rural property, and that was something that influenced how she preferred to live many times over the course of her life. Until 2019, she had her two beloved horses, Red and Raven, and you could often count on Tracy to be keeping chickens, collecting the eggs and she often had a good chicken (puppy) story to share. Tracy had a deep interest in food and the land. Nutrition and food were not only her professional and academic field, but it was also something that she practiced and lived. Tracy not only kept chickens, but she also gardened, grew food and practiced the ideas of permaculture on her property.

Tracy was a person who loved to try new things. Her passions and interests were diverse, and she was always adding to her knowledge base. Whether she was learning West Coast Swing or kayaking for the first time, you never knew what she might try next. Tracy loved to hike, bike and be active and her favourite place to do those things was in nature.

Tracy dedicated many hours and was passionate about learning wilderness survival skills in Tracker School. Through these classes and experiences she not only expanded her knowledge in many fields but also developed many supportive friendships.

Tracy was a creative person and experimented with many different mediums. Some of her creations included woven baskets, ceremonial drums, pottery, needle felting and alcohol ink prints, just to name a few. The results were unfailingly impressive. Tracy was also an accomplished musician and played the organ, drums, bass guitar and most notably, the trombone in her high school band days.

Tracy also had a deep love of Waskesiu, in Prince Albert National Park in Saskatchewan. Her family has a cabin in the park, and in her many trips there over the years, her love of that natural space never waned. Tracy was even able to spend one more week there in July with her mother, brother, nieces and cousins.

Tracy was close with her family and spent a lot of time in Calgary, Alberta with her cousins, making the long journey across the country two to three times a year to visit with them. This included spending the Christmas holidays and wearing matching holiday pajamas onesies with the family! Those visits also included summiting peaks in the Rocky Mountains and enjoying many hikes in Kananaskis Country, as well as bike rides and walks in Fish Creek Park. Tracy loved to spend time with her young cousins, and she was always willing to cuddle, read a story, teach them a craft or be the subject of their created talk show.

The family would like to thank Brian Scherban who was a close and constant friend of Tracy’s for his steady companionship and presence with her through the medical appointments and at the hospital.

Tracy is survived by her mother, Linda Everitt and her brother, Tyler Everitt (Ashton and Brooklyn) her cousin Collin (Nona) Ferris (Ella and Kyla), her cousin Laurel (Aaron) Ross (Aidan (Tina) and Tate) and her cousin Tara (Neil) Ferris (Cashel and Dax). Tracy was predeceased by her father, Barry Everitt.

Tracy’s sense of humour and her spirit will be something that will always be remembered with love. Tracy was a caring and strong woman, and she will be missed by her family and her many friends that she loved, and who loved her in return.

Celebration of Life services will be held for Tracy in Antigonish, Nova Scotia and in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.

Antigonish, Nova Scotia: Friday, August 21, 2026 at 10:00 a.m. at the StFX Art Gallery, Mulroney Hall, room 2002, 2333 Notre Dame Ave, Antigonish.

Service and interment will be held in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan at a later date.
