Obituary of Alex MacNeil

MACNEIL, Alex, 82, Antigonish, passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 22, 2014, R.K. MacDonald Nursing Home, Antigonish surrounded by his loving family. Born in St. Margaret’s Village, Victoria County, Cape Breton on September 3, 1931 he was the son of the late John George and Mary Josephine MacNeil. He was a Welder/Pipefitter in Local 682. He loved to work and spending time with his buddies and would go wherever the jobs would take him; spending his last stint in Fort MacMurray at the age of 74. He loved the outdoors and spent many hours fishing and hunting. He also enjoyed a good card game and lots of great music, and loved to play the guitar and fiddle. Alex was well known for his easy going nature and his light hearted laughter and willingness to lend a hand to anyone who needed it. He looked forward to Thursday night Bingo because his partner always showed up to play with him; his youngest grandchild Julia. He is survived by his wife of 57 years Sarah (Sadie) Linkletter, one son, John (Jane Merritt), Calgary and 5 daughters Linda (Carl Sutton), Dartmouth, Marleen (Ian MacKinnon), Alexina (George Landry), Valerie (Glen Smith), and Bonne (Allan MacDonald), all of Antigonish, 18 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by 2 brothers; Earl (Mary) and Russell (Paula), Sydney, and 9 sisters; Julia (Dill) Burton, Bay St. Lawrence, Kathleen (Mike Brown), Dingwall, Susanne MacDonald, Lorraine (Lolly) MacNeil, Angeline Reese, Evelyn Daoust, Charlotte MacNeil, Sylvia Young (Billy), Noreen MacNeil, all of Sydney and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, John George and Mary Josephine MacNeil and 2 brothers, Gordon and Bill and 6 brothers-in-law, Jim Burton, Ranald MacDonald, Nelson MacNeil, Granville Reese, Andy Daoust, and Bernie MacNeil and 2 Brothers-in-Law, Leslie and Robert Linkletter. Visitation will take place at MacIsaac Funeral Home Tuesday, February 25th; 2:00-4:00 and 7:00-9:00 pm, with a funeral mass at 2:00 on Wednesday, February 26, 2014, in St. Ninian's Cathedral. Antigonish, Reverend Donald MacGillivray presiding. Burial in the parish cemetery Family flowers only. Memorial Donations may be made to the Charity of your choice.
