Muriel MacKenzie

Obituary of Muriel Elizabeth MacKenzie

It is with great sorrow, yet profound gratitude that we announce the passing of our dear, mother, sister, aunt and grandmother on January 23, 2015 in the VG Site, QEII, Halifax. Born November 12, 1936 in Goldenville, she was the daughter of the late Wallace and Alice (Mitchell) MacDonald. Betty had many cherished friends and a very busy life. She was a member of the Canadian Cancer Society and one of the initial donors to The Lodge that Gives. She was a member of St. Ninian’s Catholic Women’s League, a founding director and secretary-treasurer of the Heritage Goldenville Society, a longtime member of TOPS, active in the seniors group and greatly enjoyed the fellowship of family and friends, including her bridge group, and was the secretary for the PU-BA Club. She volunteered her time at the RK MacDonald Guest House and Nursing Home, as well as the gift store and café at St. Martha’s Regional Hospital. Her contributions to family genealogy and meaningful reunions were immense and stand as tributes to her selfless interest and natural friendliness. She worked as a dental assistant in Antigonish for over 30 years and said the best part of her job was the patients. She loved people and got great joy from making others happy. Betty loved her family more than anything and was often heard saying, "I have the best family in the world. How’d I get so lucky?" Betty is survived by her loving daughter Sherri Lee; her adored granddaughters Alexandra and Paige MacDonald; their father Ken MacDonald; brothers Grant (Audrey) Lantz; Earl (Sharron), and Ralph, Antigonish; sister Helen Archibald, Glenelg; several nieces, nephews, cousins and 11 godchildren. She was predeceased by her husband Alexander "Alex" MacKenzie; brother Colonel William "Bill"; sister Joan (Alex) Sutherland; niece Emily Sharron MacDonald; nephews Timothy George MacDonald and Wallace Scott Sutherland. Arrangements have been entrusted to MacIsaac’s Funeral Home, Antigonish. Visitation will take place Sunday January, 25 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. The funeral will be held at 2pm on Monday at St. Ninian’s Cathedral and internment will be in the Evergreen Cemetery, Aspen at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
