Frederick Viau

Obituary of Frederick Guy Viau

It is with a heavy heart that I say goodbye to my best friend and husband Fred Viau. After a very short battle with cancer, Fred passed away at St. Martha's Regional Hospital on Sunday, March 1st, 2015. Born in Montreal on August 25th, 1954 to Joyce (MacKinnon) Viau, Fred was two years old when he returned to Erinville, NS. Fred spent a number of years living with Buddy and Lillian MacEachern in Cape George. While attending the Antigonish Regional High School Fred worked for many years at the Wagon Wheel. This job was the starting point for Fred learning about business. Fred joined STP Canada and soon became the Atlantic Sales Rep, and then the National Sales Rep and travelled all over the country. After STP Canada sold, Fred became a real estate agent in the Halifax Regional Municipality. For the next 25 years Fred enjoyed his work and had great clients and developed lifelong friends. Fred enjoyed playing sports. He played football, hockey and became a very avid racquet ball player and soon became a national referee. Fred started hunting at an early age with his Uncle Andy Gillis. He hardly ever missed a hunting season. He won his first moose license shortly after Hurricane Juan hit N.S. He and his hunting partners headed to the highlands four days after the hurricane and got a moose on the last day of their hunt. Fred studied martial arts early on and became a third degree black belt. Shortly afterward Fred became involved in kickboxing, entering many competitions and losing very few. Fred Returned to Antigonish when his mother became ill. He took care of her until she passed away. Fred is predeceased by his mother Joyce (MacKinnon) Viau; aunts and uncles Andy and Francis Gillis, Tom and Marguerite MacKinnon, Betty and Art Wilkinson, Rose and Bob Clarke, and Peggy Patterson. Fred is survived by his loving wife of 17 years Theresa (Clydesdale) MacDonald and numerous cousins. A huge thank you goes to Dr. David Cudmore, Dr. Boyd and Dr. Allan. To the nurses on the third floor of ST. Martha's Hospital and a heartfelt thank you for your love and support. Thank you also to the EHS crew that came to the house. Cremation has taken place and funeral services will take place 11:00am Saturday, March 7, 2015 in St.Ninian's Cathedral, Rev. Donald MacGillivray presiding.Interment at a later date. Donations in Fred's name may be made to Rev. Peter Smith, St. James United Church Lunch Program or to the Antigonish SPCA.
