Obituary of Betty Eileen Wallace

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our mother, sister, and Aunt Betty Eileen Wallace, age 52, on April 30th, 2015 in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Born in Antigonish, Nova Scotia, Betty grew up with several siblings and numerous friends. She graduated from St. Francis Xavier University in 1984 with an English degree before continuing on to complete her Bachelor of Social Work at St. Thomas University in New Brunswick. She married Douglas MacDonald in 1984 at St. Ninian’s Cathedral in Antigonish. Betty dedicated her life to others through her work as a social worker and as a friend. Her work often extended into her own life where she was an advocate for women’s issues and did everything she could to help the less fortunate. She worked for Coverdale Centre for Women in Saint John for many years before moving to Halifax. Betty cared deeply for everyone she met and was always willing to lend a hand. She loved being with family, laughing, and spending time outdoors. She was a longstanding member of Girl Guides of Canada where she met many lifelong friends. Later in her life she found comfort in the principles of Reiki and devoted energy to improving her life through this spiritual guidance. She is survived by her daughters Megan, Ottawa; and Emily MacDonald, Quispamsis; brothers Jimmy (Tammy), Canso; and John, British Columbia; sisters Lorraine Hadley (Bryan Watts), Dartmouth; Eva, Fort McMurray; Bernice (Brian) Munroe, Little Dover; Donna (Alden MacKenzie), Canso; Kay, Edmonton; and Joanne, Port Hawkesbury; and also by aunts, an uncle, 13 nieces, 9 nephews, and several grand-nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly. She was predeceased by her father James Vincent, mother Thelma Eva, and Uncle Leonard Daley. Visitation 7-9 pm Wednesday in St. Peter’s Place, Tracadie. NS. Funeral Mass 11:00 Thursday, May 7, in St. Peter’s Church, Tracadie, Rev. John Barry presiding. Donations should be made to Coverdale Centre for Women in Saint John, New Brunswick (www.coverdalecenterforwomen.com), or the Marguerite Centre in Halifax, Nova Scotia (www.themargueritecentre.com).
