Obituary of Donald Joseph MacLean

MacLean, Donald Joseph, of Malignant Cove passed away peacefully on July 16, 2015 at St. Martha’s Regional Hospital with his family by his side, after suffering a stroke. Born in Antigonish, he was the son of the late John P. and Isabel (Kiely) MacLean. Donald joined the Air Force at the age of 18. After serving for several years, he relocated to Manitoba and worked at Transair airlines as a radar tech/ mechanic. In 1959 Donald married Mary Alexandra (Sandra) Chisholm and moved to Winnipeg, MB, where they started their family. In 1979 Donald and Sandra moved back to Antigonish, where they raised their four children and operated "MacLean’s General Store" in Malignant Cove. In 1990 they sold the store and Donald went to work at Arisaig and Lismore Fisheries. When he finally "retired", he continued to work out of his own shop, fixing anything that was brought his way. Donald was predeceased by his cherished wife, Mary (Sandra); his sister Martha (Sis); brothers, Tom, Roderick, William, Jack, John P. (Butch) and Fr. Longard (SFM). He is survived by children Longard (Cathy) of Malignant Cove, Coleen MacLean-Marlow (John Marlow) of Quadra Island, BC, James of Clarenville, NL, and Juanita I. MacLean of Quadra Island, BC; Grandchildren Greg, James, and Brennan MacLean; Ceilidh, Arran, and Mairi Marlow; Lauren and Mathew MacLean; Isabella and Margaret Miner; Brother Cecil of Calgary, Alberta, as well as the many Nieces and Nephews whom he loved as his own. You will be missed, but remembered with joy. As Donald wished, cremation has taken place. Funeral services will be held 11 am Tuesday, July 21 at St. George’s Church, Georgeville, Father Angus MacGillvray officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery. Family would like to express sincere thanks to EHS and nursing staff of St. Martha’s GARU unit. Memorial donations can be made to St. Martha’s Palliative Care.
