Obituary of Annie Genevieve MacGillivray
ANNIE GENEVIEVE (CONNORS) MACGILLIVRAY - Annie passed away peacefully on January 29, 2016 in the High-Crest Sherbrooke Nursing Home surrounded by family.
Annie was born in Bayfield, Antigonish County on January 2, 1929; daughter of the late John and Alice (Chisholm) Connors.
Mom attended Bayfield School and the Mabou Convent and after having raised her own family she worked for many years as an office manager in both the legal and engineering professions.
Coming from a family of seven children, Annie was lured away from her beautiful Bayfield to become a Pointer. She married Duncan MacGillivray in 1948 joining the William’s Point MacGillivray clan and marrying into a family of sixteen children.
Mom never said a bad word about anyone. She was one of the most giving souls, always thinking of others before herself. Her home was always open to anyone to share a cup of tea, a meal, or just chat. Any time of day or night, one would find the gang playing cards around her kitchen table.
She had an amazing ability to instantly be able to feed a multitude of people without any advance notice. Her homemade breads, pickles, jams, meals and desserts were second to none.
Trips with "The Girls" were special. They travelled here at home, to the States and Europe. Her Irish heritage was very important to her, and she and "The Girls" made numerous trips to Ireland to enjoy the culture and music.
The beauty of Bayfield, the beach and the saltwater remained entrenched in her blood and so she moved back to Bayfield to live the final years of her life before moving to the nursing home in Sherbrooke.
Annie is survived by her children: Gerard (Lorraine), Maryvale; Terry, Bayfield; Lee, William’s Point; Jerome (Donna), Halifax; Shannon, Antigonish; Trudy (Ian Gillis), Didsbury, Alberta; Muriel (Kevin MacDonald), Heatherton; Ellen (Terry MacDonald), William’s Point; Mike (Natalie), Halifax; twenty-four grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren; sister Kitty MacFarlane, William’s Point; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband Duncan; daughter Maureen; son Brendan; four children in infancy; sisters Betty McKeough and Mary MacGillivray; brothers Reginald, Dan and Eugene.
Visitation 2-4 and 7-9 pm Tuesday, February 2, in MacIsaac Funeral Home, 61 Pleasant St, Antigonish. Funeral Mass 11 am Wednesday, February 3 in St. Ninian’s Cathedral, Antigonish. Rev. Joe MacKenzie presiding. Burial at a later date in St. Ninain’s Cemetery.
Donations can be made to the Antigonish Food Bank or the Right to Life.
Mom was a very devote member of St. Ninian’s Cathedral and her deep Christian faith endured with her throughout her life.
Special thanks to all the staff at the High-Crest Sherbrooke Nursing Home and St. Martha’s Hospital for their excellent care provided to our mom. www.MacIsaacs.ca
