Obituary of Mary Stephanie MacKenzie
Mary S. MacKenzie, 88 of MacKinnon St., Antigonish, passed away May 22, 2019 at St. Martha’s Regional Hospital. Born December 7, 1930 in Harbour Grace, Newfoundland she was a daughter of the late Edward and Minnie (O'Brien) Freeman. She left home at the age of 16 to attend the Halifax Infirmary School of Nursing. She was a practicing OR nurse when she met her long time friend and love, A. Gregory MacKenzie. They were married in 1958 and moved to Antigonish to start their family.
Mary was a very active member of the community. She was recognized by the Catholic Women’s League of Canada, The Canadian Red Cross Society, and the Victorian Order of Nurses for her faithful and exceptional services. She was a member of St. Ninian’s Parish, attended church weekly, and willingly volunteered her time when needed. She was a member of St. Martha's Hospital Auxiliary for many years, participated in fundraising activities such as the Mayfest and volunteered at the Hospital Gift Shop. Mary was an inspiration in every group of which she was involved.
She was a member of the Greenwold Bridge Club, enjoyed playing cards with her friends, going for daily walks down Main Street with her daughter, and getting dressed up for community and church events. The times she enjoyed the most were the times she spent with family and friends.
