Obituary of Mary Elizabeth McKenna

It is with broken hearts that we, the family of Mary Elizabeth (Brown) McKenna of Brierly Brook and formerly of Big Marsh, announce her passing on Thursday, April 7, 2022, at home surrounded by her loving family following a courageous three and a half year battle with cancer.

Born in Big Marsh, she was a daughter of the late Murray Joseph and Margaret Theresa (Chisholm) Brown.

Mary was a loving mother, wife, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, Godmother and friend to all, near and far. When Mary met family and friends, she always had a warm greeting and a smile for them.

Mary is survived, and will be deeply missed, by husband Kenneth, daughter Kimberly Ann (Leo Floyd), Antigonish; son Joseph Gerald (Jerry), Brierly Brook; granddaughter, Jenna Floyd (Zack MacDonald); grandson Mark Floyd; great-granddaughter Rose Ann Floyd-McDonald; sisters Catherine Ann MacDonald, Antigonish; Marcella Brown, Big Marsh; Bernadette Brown, Big Marsh; brothers James MacLellan (Jamie) Brown, Big Marsh; John R. Brown, Houston, Texas; nephews Darcy (Kim) MacDonald; Mark (Sungeun) MacDonald, John Brown; Godmother to nephews Michael Pelly and Darcy MacDonald; aunts Theresa Chisholm and Jane Flynn, Boston; Brother-in-law Patrick McKenna (Melinda); sister-in-law Carol Ann Pelly (Wayne); numerous cousins and additional nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents, Mary was predeceased by brother Alexander; sister-in-law Brenda (Connor) Brown; brothers-in-law Lauchie MacDonald; Theo Blanchard; uncle Alexander Chisholm (Caledonia Mills, Antigonish Co.); aunts Catherine MacDonald and Isabel MacIsaac, Boston; Mary Sullivan (Erinville, Guysborough Co.); father and mother-in-law Gerald and Dorothy McKenna; nephew Doug McKenna; sisters and brothers-in-law Catherine (Kitty) and Joe Tramble and Maureen and Richard MacKinnon.

We would like to express sincere thanks and much appreciation to everyone who was involved in Mom's care throughout her journey; especially Continuing Care, Victorian Order of Nurses, the Palliative Care team and oncology unit at St. Martha's Hospital, Drs. Emily Rice, Saliba, Cooper and Steeves as well as special friend Shawna MacAskill for her dedication/care to mom.

Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 pm on Tuesday, April 12, 2022 in MacIsaac Funeral Home, 61 Pleasant St., funeral mass 11 am Wednesday, April 13, 2022 in St. Ninian Cathedral, Rev. Danny MacLennan presiding. Burial in the parish cemetery at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to Cathy's Place Cancer Resource Centre.
