Obituary of Robert Berkley Cameron
Berkley Cameron passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 7th with his family by his side. Born in Fairmont in 1939, Berkley was the youngest of 12 children born to Allan D and Catherine Cameron. In addition to being a teacher for over 30 years, Berkley had a great love for the outdoors and was an avid cross country skier, fossil hunter and mushroom picker. He was passionate about outdoor education and was instrumental in developing the reach-out teach-out centre in Arisaig. Berkley also enjoyed other activities including golf, bridge, reading world war II novels, and cooking. People came from near and far for a taste of his delicious biscuits, mustard pickles and turkey pies. He was also well known for his backyard garden that he generously shared with anyone who stopped by the back deck. Probably nowhere was Berkley happier then when he was surrounded by friends and family and playing the piano at 65 Brookland St. Berkley was known as a kind soul who would give you the shirt off his back even if it wasn't his own shirt!
Berkley is survived by his wife of 53 years Merle (Gouthro), four children, Wendy (Jean Robert Lachance), Rollie (Sue), Michelle (Darren MacGillivray), and Robert (Jes). He was also graced with and took great pride in his six grandchildren, Tyler and Grace Cameron, Emily and Grant MacGillivray and Drew and Taylor Cameron. Berkley is also survived by three brothers, Junior, Clarence and St. John Cameron and one sister, Rhoda King.
By Berkley's wishes, there will be no visitation or funeral service. A celebration of his life will take place on July 30th from 6-8pm at the St.F.X Keating Centre.
Special thanks to the amazing ICU nursing staff at St.Martha's hospital, especially Shelley, Yvette, Brittany and Meghan and also to Sister Catherine Anne MacGillivray for her support during this difficult time.
