Obituary of John D. MacDonald

It is with heartfelt sadness we announce the passing of John D MacDonald, 93 of West River, Antigonish County on Wednesday, September 7, 2022, in St. Martha's Regional Hospital. Born in Springfield, Antigonish County, he was the son of the late David and Mary (Chisholm) MacDonald.      

Early in his life, he loved coaching the Tug-of-War team and helping with the local hockey team. Throughout his life, John D’s passions included bowling, playing cards, hunting, fishing and growing his vegetables, best known for his potatoes and string beans. John D enjoyed sports and was a lifelong fan of the Blue Jays and Leafs. He had a special gift of working with his hands and for getting the job done. He retired in 1994 as a Road Foreman with the Department of Transportation. In retirement, he enjoyed visiting with his family, playing cards, going for drives, and sharing a good story.     

John D is survived by his children, Heather (Mike) Jensen, Ottawa, ON; Lisa (Bradley Davies), Belle River, PEI; Jane, Antigonish, NS; Jennifer (Chris Grover) Frankville, NS; grandchildren Kate and Laura Jensen; Emma and Iain Davies; brother, Gerald (Betty) MacDonald. He was predeceased by his wife Isabel (July 22, 2018), brothers, Hugh (Mary), Andrew (Bud) (Mary Ellen), Collie, Rod, Dave (Betty), Jamie, and an infant at birth and sister, Margaret (Girlie) (Oliver Grant).       

John D had a gentle soul, quick wit, and a love for life. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him.    

Grave side service will be held at St. Joseph’s Cemetery,  Antigonish Co. on Monday, September 12, 2022, at 10 am, Rev. Bernard MacAdam presiding. Reception to follow at the Lakeside Community Center. Donations may be made to VON Antigonish.
