Obituary of Leonard Hanrahan

The family of John Leonard “Len” Hanrahan is saddened to announce his death.  He died peacefully on November 4th, 2022 in the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, at the age of 77.

Born and raised in Antigonish, he was the son of the late James and Alice (MacDonald) Hanrahan. Len was predeceased by brothers Hugh and Vaughn. He is survived by brothers James (Alvah), Ottawa; John (Terry), Halifax; sister-in-law, Diane, Antigonish; nieces Alisa Hanrahan, Ottawa; Margaret Ann Hanrahan-Denk, Vienna, Austria; Erin (Hanrahan) O’Brien, Halifax; nephews Sean Hanrahan, Ottawa; Stephen Hanrahan, Halifax; and many dear cousins, grand nieces and godchildren. Len will be greatly missed by his life companion of over 40 years, Monica Olsson of Limhamn, Sweden and his many friends, especially his fellow teacher, confidant and beekeeper, Mario Swinkels of Antigonish.

Len lived a life full of travel and adventure. In his early career Len was a talented printer and carpenter. He received his BA, BEd from St.F.X. and taught in Quebec, a number of African countries with CUSO and in high schools in Antigonish and Guysborough Counties in Nova Scotia. Upon retirement he pursued his love of nature, delighting in fishing, boating and visiting his many friends around the world. Len’s home was always open to friends from far and wide and for all who knew and loved him, the world has just become a little less interesting with his passing.
