Obituary of Hughena MacLellan
It is with sorrow that the family of Mary Hughena MacLellan announce her passing on Saturday, June 3, 2023, in the RK MacDonald Nursing Home, Antigonish, with family at her side.
Born November 17, 1938 in Centreville, Cape Breton, Hughena was a daughter of the late James and Margaret MacLellan.
Early on, it was evident Hughena had a calling to nursing and she obtained her CNA designation from Camp Hill Hospital in Halifax. Shortly after completing the course, she began her career at a Veterans Hospital in Montreal. Hughena resided in Montreal for several years before returning home to Nova Scotia and worked at the RK MacDonald Nursing Home before retiring in the 80’s.
Hughena met her husband Roddie MacLellan, and they married in 1978. They built a life in Big Marsh, Antigonish.
Hughena was a true caregiver, caring for her parents during periods of illness and her husband Roddie in his later years. She loved her annual summer trips with her three sisters, many memories were made, and laughs shared. Nothing brought her more joy than trips “home” to Cape Breton to see her family. Hughena loved a good game of cards and she and Roddie enjoyed gardening together, always growing a healthy crop of potatoes. Hughena had a deep Christian faith and was called upon by her family and friends to pray for the sick or for their special intentions. We had great comfort knowing she was praying on our behalf.
Hughena is survived by her siblings James (Mary) MacLellan; Elizabeth Beaton; Sister Isabel MacLellan, CND; Kaye Harrison; Donnie (Paula) MacLellan; sister-in-law Monica MacLellan and several nieces and nephews.
Aside from her parents and husband, Hughena was predeceased by her brother Allan MacLellan and brothers-in-law Angus Beaton and Kent Harrison.
Visitation will be Thursday, June 8th from 3pm-8pm in Maclsaac Funeral Home, Antigonish. The funeral service will be held Friday, June 9th, 1pm in Ninian Cathedral, Rev. Danny MacLennan presiding. Burial in the parish cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memory may be made to the St Ninian's Cemetery Fund or the St John the Baptist Cemetery Fund (Brook Village).
