Obituary of Maren Rose Neary

We are heartbroken to announce the passing of our precious Maren on March 5, 2024. 

Maren is the beautiful little girl of Justin Neary and Melissa MacLellan; and the sweet little sister to Ben Neary. 

Maren was born, on a sunny Saturday afternoon at St Martha’s Hospital, December 23, 2023. She arrived in quick fashion, ensuring she spend a magical Christmas with us. Maren has beautiful big eyes and gorgeous dark hair, many people noting a resemblance to her big brother. She will be forever remembered, by those that knew her, for her expressive faces and bright demeanour. 

Maren loved snuggling with her daddy, who she very quickly wrapped around her tiny fingers. Maren also loved playing with her big brother Ben. She was absolutely enamoured with him; always smiling at him and following his movements. But nothing could compare to being in her mommy’s arms, the place she found the most comfort. 

In Maren’s short time with us she showed immense strength and resilience when faced with her medical challenges. We would like to express gratitude to the IWK Children’s Heart Centre team, PICU and MSNU staff and the Pediatric Cardiac Surgery team. With particular attention to Dr David Horne, Amy Lockhart, Dr Jayani Abeysekera, and NP Gina O’Leary. 

We would also like to thank the EMS first responders, and St Martha’s Emergency and CWHU staff for providing amazing care during our hardest moments imaginable. Special thank you to Dr Terese Chisholm, Dr Sarah Morse, Jessica Ball, Sarah Delorey and Tania Burke. 

Maren is loved forever by her Mia and Papa, Maria MacLellan and Alan Gillis; Nanny and Papa, Terry and Robert Neary; great grandparents Jim and Mary MacLellan, and many Great Aunts, Great Uncles and cousins. 

Maren brought so much joy, happiness and love to her family and we cannot explain how this loss has affected us. But we promise to forever honour her and carry her with us. 

If anyone may wonder how to provide support at this time; we ask you to practice being present, hold your loved ones close, or donate to the IWK Children’s Heart Centre in honour of Maren. 

An intimate family ceremony will take place with Father Danny MacLennan.
