John Gottschall

Obituary of John Peter Gottschall

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of John Peter Gottschall, a beloved husband, father, brother, and friend, who left this world on December 1, 2024, at the age of 68.

Born on December 12, 1955, in Antigonish, John was the cherished son of Michael and Sophie (Rossong) Gottschall. His life, although cut short, was filled with love, laughter, and an unwavering spirit that touched all who knew him. John’s legacy is one of resilience and hard work. He was a self-employed painting contractor, known as a "Jack of all trades," who approached every project with dedication and enthusiasm. His craftsmanship was renowned in the community, and he took pride in transforming spaces with his skilled hands. No project was too big for John, and his determination inspired those around him.

Family was at the core of John’s life. He is survived by his loving wife, Delima, and their two children, Jonathan, Kelly and son-in law Jake MacLellan. His two step grandchildren Sophie and Isaac MacLellan who will forever carry his memory in their hearts. John shared a special bond with his brother David (Norma Haley) Gottschall, residing in Antigonish, and with his sisters: Francis Huntley of Saskatchewan, Kathy (Eric) Pass of Prince Edward Island, and Linda Gottschall of Calgary. He was preceded in death by his brother, Wally Gottschall, as well as brothers-in-law Barry Mattie and Vince Huntley. John’s family extended beyond blood relations. He cherished his sisters-in-law, including Thelma (Danny) MacGillivray of Tracadie, Norma Jean (Billy) White of Pomquet, Hazel (Gerard) Tate of Mattie Settlement, and Mary Theresa (Kevin) of Kenzieville. He was also a proud godfather to Derrick MacGillivray and Joni MacCulloch and had a special place in the hearts of many nieces and nephews.

Outside of his work and family, John had diverse hobbies that brought him joy. He loved to play bingo and crib, games that often brought laughter and friendly competition among family and friends. Fishing was a passion of his, providing him with peaceful moments spent in nature. John enjoyed going for drives, exploring scenic routes, and soaking up the beauty of his surroundings. Every Sunday, he looked forward to listening to Darryl MacLean's country gold show on the radio, finding comfort in the melodies and stories shared.

John’s final farewell will take place in MacIsaac Funeral Home on Friday, December 6, 2024, with visitation from 1:00-3:00 PM. It is a time for family and friends to gather, celebrate his life, and share cherished memories.
