Obituary of Alexander Roderick Ross

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Alexander (Sandy) Ross, Green Meadows Seniors Residence, formerly of Hillcrest St., Antigonish on October 31, 2016, in St. Martha’s Regional Hospital, following a long and wonderful life. Born on December 23, 1920 in Inverness, he was the son of the late WJ and Bessie Ross. Sandy began his career with the Bank of Nova Scotia, Antigonish, shortly thereafter enlisted in the Canadian Army and served from 1940-1946. His banking career took him to Hamilton, Ottawa and Montreal, returning to Antigonish in 1954 to join the staff at the Bergengren Credit Union. He also "did the books" for MacKinnon’s Pharmacy for many years, retiring in 1985. Sandy met the love of his life, Rita McPhee in Ottawa and they were married on June 16, 1951. Sandy was an active member of the community, serving on various boards and committees. He especially enjoyed attending the monthly ROMEO meetings. He loved reading, classical music and was an avid sports fan. His favorites included the Habs, Alouettes, Patriots, Celtics, Red Sox, Cardinals and of course, all St FX teams. He will be forever remembered for his patience, kindness, quick wit and knee slapping humour. We lost a true gentleman today. Sandy is survived by his wife of 65 years, Rita, son Allan (Denise), Calgary, daughter Patsy MacIsaac, Halifax. He was loving "Papa" to grandchildren John and Kathleen Ross, Liam and Callum MacIsaac. He is also survived by brothers Billy (Kamloops), Ed (Vancouver). Besides his parents, Sandy was predeceased by brothers Donald, Douglas and sister Mary Campbell. Visitation will held Thursday, November 3 from 2-4pm at MacIsaac Funeral Home, 61 Pleasant Street, Antigonish. Funeral service will take place on Friday, November 4 at 11am in St. Ninian’s Catherdral, Rev. Donald MacGillivray presiding.
