We recall many fond memories of Ricky and his friends Mark, Ian and several others. In those days they pretty well lived at our pool. How about the day the 3 boys borrowed Chebot's motorized scooter; they went down the field behind Doucet's and they abandoned the scooter quickly when a horse appeared galloping towards them...they dropped the scooter and ran for there lives. There were many of these types of memories. We cherish them all and we loved Ricky and his friends. We also share in your grief. We take consolation that Ricky is now at peace with God. We are confident that all of us will find solace in all the fond memories of this beautiful talented caring individual. God bless all of Ricky's family and friends.

Deepest condolences to the Smith family! I can still remember the day you moved from College Street to Maple Drive. Ricky was my best friend at 5 years old. I stood in the doorway and cried as I watched the moving trucks - one of those early childhood memories that I never forgot. RIP Ricky.

So many fond memories of Ricky growing up, a guy was always fun to be around, filled with so much energy and a love of life.
Ricky was also one of those guys that had your back. At our confirmation in sixth grade not a place you would expect needing help but Ricky was ready, most exciting part of the confirmation.
When we were 16, Stewie and I were painting a house up the road at the same time Ricky was painting his sister's house. Ricky would scare the heck out of Stewie every time he got more than 5 feet off the ground. We may not have been the best painters but we certainly had fun.

They were the 3 Musketeers........Ricky, Ian Sullivan, and my brother Mark. I really can’t think back to a time in their youth, growing up on Maple Drive and Sunset Terrace, when those 3 boys were not together. Although they were typical boys, each brought something unique to the bond of their friendship. Whether playing street hockey......building forts......swimming in the Cormier’s pool ........or trying to be the “least scared out of their collective wits” while listening to Miriam’s famous Ghost Stories.....they were 3 but when together, they were one.
If only those perfect moments would last forever ....... but then life happens.
To all the Smith family, please know that Ricky was cherished then and now. He will always be remembered.
Be strong for one another and know that you are in our hearts as you grieve your loss of your little brother, Ricky

There are times in our lives when memories come flooding in...for me, this is one of those times. Ricky and I were next door neighbours. Ricky was my 2nd friend ever and only because I knocked on Mark Doucet's door first. I was 5 years old. We had fun and laughed every day. Maple Drive was the best road hockey street in Antigonish. Ricky drove my first ever new bike into a car and put me in the hospital for 5 days with a road hockey related eye injury (I wish I kept the get well card). Nothing could hurt our friendship. We learned to swim, learned to camp (in my backyard), learned to build a Roman Valley log cabin. We spent many days at the Cormier's pool sometimes deciding which neighbourhood kids got to swim that day. We lost touch following high school but there is no losing touch with early childhood memories. Those early days on Maple Drive were special and for me, this is because Ricky was my friend.
My deepest condolences to Mary Ann, Nicole and all family. Rest in Peace Ricky.

Ricky and I grew up together in Antigonish 3 houses apart many years ago, we were close friends (most times, best friends... i'm sure all friends would understand that dynamic). We hung out almost every day of our lives (until leaving Antigonish) playing street hockey and softball on our street. We also loved hunting and fishing and pretty much anything outdoors (we built a very cool log cabin in the forest behind my house). We spent a lot of time at our favorite neighbor's (Chebot & Miriam Cormier) swimming in their pool and doing odd jobs around their property. We also spent all those years together in school (Braemore & Antigonish Regional), both of which were in close walking distance for us. These were much simpler and great times and I remember Ricky feeling the same way. Ricky was a very tough kid and we found our share of trouble those early years (fun trouble!). He did love his family and his family loved him. I remember one day when a bunch of us were playing street hockey out front of his house, an old pick-up truck came racing through our game. Ricky's older brother Truman must have been watching out for us kids. The unlucky guy driving that truck made a horrible mistake and attempted to make another pass though our game, Truman ran out and intercepted him. Needless to say, I never saw that truck or that guy on our street again after Ricky's older brother showed Ricky, and all us kids, how much he was loved.
I can only imagine the great love that Ricky had for his daughter and wife. As tough as he was when I knew him as a kid and young man, Ricky showed us all many times (in his way), love.
As I fight through the sadness and tears of just now learning of Ricky's passing, I feel so much for his daughter, wife, siblings (most of whom I also grew up with), and all his loved ones. While we are not together to reminisce about Ricky, he will always be with all of us in the memories we have of better days shared with Ricky.
Love,
Mark Doucet
