Hello to all the Gillis's.
I so wish I was in Nova Scotia so I could have personally paid my respects to one of the best neighbours anyone could ever have. When I was a kid "Mrs. Gillis" was always friendly and helpful, and even came over to tend to us when we were sick at times. As an adult raising my family next door, Bernadette could be counted on for whatever we might need in a pinch, and was a joy to talk to and share stories. Her gardens always made me so jealous! In the later years, it was my privilege to help out with the yard work and snow shovelling. A very small price to pay for being able to live next door to the best neighbourhood mom anyone could ask for. I will remember her fondly, and celebrate her life when I tell others about her.

We were very sorry to hear of Bernadette's passing. We were long time neighbours at Malignant Cove and worked with both Gerry & Bernadette on volunteer organizations, including the Antigonish Heritage Museum and the Cancer Society. Even after Bernadette gave up the helm of an organization or committee, we knew she was still in the background giving sage advice and overseeing progress. We will miss her.

I am sorry to hear of the passing of your dear Mom.
It’s difficult to say goodby to Mom.
I hope you will find healing in sharing the many stories of unconditional love and togetherness with family and friends over the years.
I will always cherish the memories of my summer vacations driving with Sally to Antigonish and being welcomed by Bubby and Gerry at your Hawthorne home and The Cove. Much fun and games were enjoyed. Thank you all.
May Bernadette rise and rest in the Peace of Christ. With Love, Kathleen (Kathy) Walker

Deepest sympathy to the Gillis family on the passing of your Mother. I will always remember her sitting in the entrance at the Sylvan Apartment after Mass on Saturday waiting for her drive to The Cove hoping to find a feed of lobsters at the Gillis cottage. She was a kind soul who will be remembered forever.

As years went by, we shared common interests and friendship. She was a very gracious lady who will be missed by many. Sincere sympathy to her family.

Sending our sincere condolences to all the family on the passing of your Mom and grandmother. She was such a lovely lady, I’m sure there’s lots of family stories being recalled as you reminisce about all the memories you have from over the years.
Her daffodils were always the first to bloom in spring, and a nice sign for all those driving up Hawthorne St. Bernadette was a gracious & generous hostess on many occasions at the annual post horseshoe tournament pot luck supper in Malignant Cove, lots of good memories from those times.
May you all find comfort and support through your families and friends and knowing others remember her fondly as well.
With sympathy, David & June

My condolences to all the Gillis family(s). Losing a mom is never easy and I hope your wonderful memories will carry you through the sad times to come. Wish we could be there to share some hugs. Growing up next door was a wonderful experience and your mom was always so kind and loving to everyone in the neighbourhood. As I got older she taught me a lot about flowers and she shared many roots and cuttings from her garden which ended up in my various gardens in Newfoundland and Nova Scotia. She was a treasure to the community and will be missed by so many.

Hello everyone ,
So sorry to hear the news today about your mom (bub)
Where I haven’t seen her in quite awhile , Covid and all . When I did it was always a great conversation of Gillis history or plants and flowers and my attempts to keep them alive and looking good.

I want to express our condolences and sorrow for your loss.
She was a great lady .
