To the Sears Family:
Our sincere sympathy to you on the passing of your father Tom. May the many fond memories of his well lived life with you all, give comfort and peace at this most difficult time. Having grown up on Highland Drive, it was always a great attraction to all the "guys" on the street when Tom would show us his new "convertible car" with the top down!

Dear Carrie (thank God it's a girl), Shannon and family,
So very sad to hear that your father has passed away. What a wonderful life he had!
Such a constant and positive presence in the community.
I remember one day at the Keppoch in the 70's, a crew of us were 'bombing' down the Rendezvous without a lot of finesse or control. Your Dad noticed us and decided to provide an impromptu, much needed ski lesson.
He led us to the Lullaby and told us to follow him down the hill.
I can still picture him, gracefully floating and gliding back and forth down the hill.
We picked up a few valuable skiing tips that day - but as an adult, I look back on it as a life lesson in the importance of community and how 'it takes a village to raise a child'.
Your Dad was an Antigonish legend.
Love,
Edie

Garrett, Sean and all of the Sears family, I have fond memories of both of your parents at Jimtown and Highland Drive. I remember your father as very kind and interesting but his obituary highlights that he was much more. Community minded and ‘renaissance man’ capture some of his other wonderful characteristics. Please accept condolences from Nancy and I on your loss. Sincerely, David Graham

I am so sorry to hear of Tom's passing. I remember him from Keppoch days. It was his patience, encouragement and kindness which finally enabled me to stay upright in those GLM classes. Not a natural athlete, I did have to repeat the course, but through Tom's persistent support I spent many marvellous hours on all the trails (except Blotter). Thank you Tom. Condolences to all his family.

Tom Sears - a true gentleman! He was a interesting conversationist and a very astute businessman. He gave me my first job pumping gas at Eastern Auto. I remember him as a man who played the trumpet and loved jazz. I remember him too as a master mariner and an avid skier both, on the water and on the ski slopes. He certainly was impressive around a barbeque and my family and I experienced his skill on several occasions.
He will be deeply missed by all the Foleys.
My deepest condolences to A.J. Tommy, Garret, Sean, Shannon and Carrie.

My sincere condolences to you all.
Your father was an important person in my early life. I have very positive memories of him - of Christmas dinners together with your family and of living on the same street. Your dad was kind to me; even when I was very young he would speak to me with respect and interest which was unusual from an adult in those days. One of my earliest memories is taking a trip to Cape Breton with your parents when I was only 3 or 4 years old. Thanks to him, we were able to take up down-hill skiing. I am grateful for the memories of your wonderful parents.

I wish to share a story my dad (Chuck O'Brien) told me of how he and Tom brought water skiing to Antigonish. They had seen water skiing on movie preambles and being skilled snow skiers thought " how hard could this be?
They bought a boat ( I forget who got one 1st, but I do recall dad building one in the basement) and took it to lachaber lake to learn.
Dad agreed to try to ski 1st.
They rolled out the rope and dad stood 5 feet from the edge of the lake and said "hit it".
After scraping the dirt off himself he realized he needed to be closer to the water. He stood in the water up to his ankles. Hit it!
Upon further discussion they agreed he needed to be in deeper water. He waded out until he was chest deep. But his skis were on the bottom of the lake. Hit it!
They agreed deeper water was necessary. It was agreed that Tom should try it.
If you recall that is a very deep lake.
When Tom said "Hit it"... his ski were pointed down, not tips up. Dad recalled watching the ropes angle go deeper and deeper, as Tom was determined to try to pull on his feet to change the angle of the skis to rise to the surface. He eventually let go of the handle and swum to the surface.
After this they determined you had to start with the tips out of the water.
The result - everyone in the town and county were offered to learn for the next few decades.

Dear Carrie, AJ, Tommy, Garrett, Sean, and Shannon
It's always sad when family members pass away. I remember when your dad and Aunt Shirley used to spend Christmas morning with us - until both the Foley and Sears families got so big that it became kind of impractical. I remember your father teaching us the basics of water skiing and the excitement I felt when I could finally remain upright for longer than 20 seconds! He was such a patient, interesting teacher. How lucky I was to have lived down the street from the kindest of uncles.
My thoughts and prayers are with you.
Love, Sheila (Foley) McMullin
