Bernadette Landry

Obituary of Bernadette Marie Landry

Bernadette Marie Landry, 89, lifelong resident of Antigonish passed away December 14, 2023, in St Martha’s Regional Hospital. Born in Sylvan Valley, she was the youngest daughter of James (Jim) Archibald and Margaret (Marnie) Janet (Chisholm) MacDougall. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Mom attended Mount Saint Bernard Secretarial School, and then worked at Smith’s Hardware. She married Dad in 1956. They built a home and a family on Victoria Street. While the kids were young, she was a stay at home mom.

Mom re-entered the workforce first at the Corner Store in Antigonish and then at the Library at St Francis Xavier University. She enjoyed going to dances in her early years and then the local Highland Games, Fall Exhibition and sporting events, especially with her sister Anne. She was a Blue Jays and Pittsburgh Penguins fan. Mom loved to travel, and one highlight was visiting Germany and Rome with her sister. She also loved her car, keeping it clean and ready for drives all around Nova Scotia, with Dad or the girls; the two Bettys, Gertie, and Anne.

She was a wonderful grandmother and was excited to be a new great-grandmother. Mom’s last years were spent enjoying her home, receiving all visitors and sitting on the deck in the sun overseeing the comings and goings on Victoria Street. The family wishes to thank special caregivers, Elsie and Sonya for their love and companionship for mom over the past two years.

She is survived by children, Bill (Sarita), Antigonish; Reg (Patricia), Earltown; Audrey (Aville) North Grant; Bernadette, Halifax; Lorna (Mike and son Linkin) Vancouver; and Carol Anne (Dan) Ohio.

She will be missed by grandchildren, Sarah and Maria Landry; John, Steven and Nicole Landry; Holly Rawlins (Zach), Curran and Shane Arsenault; Rachelle (Henry) and Quinn Bunbury; Malcolm, James and Robyn Chisholm and great granddaughter Phoebe Rawlins.

Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband of 63 years, John Reginald Landry, granddaughter Jancey, siblings, James (Sonny), Roderick (Roddie), Anne Laura Grant, and William (Bill).

Visitation will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 pm on Tuesday, December 19 in MacIsaac Funeral Home, 61 Pleasant Street. Funeral Mass 11 am Wednesday in St. Ninian Cathedral, Rev. Danny MacLennan presiding. Burial in the parish cemetery at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of your choice.
