Elizabeth Winsor

Obituary of Elizabeth Marie Winsor

Elizabeth was the eldest daughter of the late Janet (Jenny MacLellan) and Joseph MacGillivray of Antigonish.

Elizabeth spent many of her formative years growing up with her seven siblings on St. Mary’s Street and Landsdown Drive, Antigonish. It was in those formative years she discovered a love of books and reading became a lifetime passion.

On December 21977, she met and fell in love with a young sailor in uniform, David Winsor. They married on July 21,1979, beginning her new life as a “Sailor’s Spouse” in a bond that endured for 44 years.

Elizabeth followed her young sailor as David’s career took them from Dartmouth & Lantz to Saint John, New Brunswick and back to Dartmouth in 1998.

When David made his final career move to Algoma Central Corporation, Elizabeth joined a fraternity of other ”Sailor’s Wives” forming many bonds of friendship especially with Captain Danny & Anne McCormick, Captain George & Marion Kendall of Lewisporte, NL.  Elizabeth also enjoyed sailing on the ships with David on many trips around the Great Lakes as “Mrs. Chief”. She enjoyed exercising her responsibilities as “Mrs. Chief”, chatting and getting to know many members of the crew. She also enjoyed, before the days of Satellite TV, bringing members the crew up to date on what happened on the last half hour of Young & Restless at afternoon “Coffee Breaks”

That passion for travel wasn’t limited to traveling on one of the ships as “Mrs. Chief” She and David made many “Winter Trips” to Dominican Republic, Cuba and Jamaica.

Elizabeth is predeceased by her parents, Jenny & Joseph MacGillivray, parents-in-law, Patricia & Harold Winsor, and brother-in-law Douglas Winsor.

Elizabeth leaves to mourn her loving husband, David, of 44 years; siblings; Tom (Karen) MacGillivray, Pauline MacGillivray, Father Donald MacGillivray, Sister Catherine Ann MacGillivray (CSM), Janet Hazelton (Jeff), Angus (Mary) MacGillivray, Marguerite MacGillivray, Godfather and uncle Donald MacLellan; uncle Colin (Shirley) MacLellan; brothers & sister-in-law; Derek (Michelle) Winsor, St.John’s NL; Donald (Helen) Winsor, Victoria BC; Debbie Manzig/Winsor (Walter), Chicago IL; also an ever widening circle of cousins, nieces, nephews, grand nieces & nephews, along with a wide circle of friends across the country, and around the world.

I would also like to extend my gratitude to the staff of the shore side community along with volunteer, and very close friend, Mike Myers, for all the love and care given to Elizabeth during her stay at Oceanview Manor.
